Monitoring

Flora

About 30% of this area is occupied by indigenous forest and shrubland in which there are many fine stands of puriri/taraire dominant forest and diverse Podocarp/broadleaf forest.  The flora is significant, containing a range of forest types, including old growth volcanic broadleaf forest, which carries a first priority for protection in the Northland Conservancy Conservation Management Strategy 1999, and is "one of Northland's rarest."  These are particularly important habitat and food sources for NZ pigeon which will move between remnants allowing discontinuous habitats to become part of the same system.

Fauna

Several threatened species occur in the area including North Island Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), Kukupa (New Zealand Pigeon: Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae), Kaka and Kauri Snails (Paryphanta busbyi busbyi).  It is estimated that 500 North Island Brown Kiwi live in the area based on kiwi call monitoring results.

Monitoring Activities

The trust carries out various monitoring activities to ensure the effectiveness of its activities. Independent monitoring is also contracted out to ensure accuracy of results.  The latest independent monitoring exercise of the overall biodiversity of the area was undertaken by Dr. Ray Pierce.  The results were extremely encouraging with good forest health and low predator activity detected.
