The Waimate North area has a significant number of North Island brown kiwi in its locality and it is imperative this stock is conserved.
Volunteers from the Trust monitor kiwi calls each year and the data is supplied for national monitoring.

In 2007 the Trust developed a Kiwi Call Locator document to enhance the existing call records. The locator helps to pinpoint more accurately the possible number of birds in a specific area.

A strategic plan is being developed for the recovery of
Northland North Island brown kiwi for the (ten year) period
2009-2019
and beyond. The plan includes key actions required
for their recovery.
